network printing

Hi,

I´ve got a  problem with printing from a windows 2003 r2 machine.

ive got 2 printers installed and shared for network users to print to my problem is that
the client machines lose the connection after a while the strange thing in my opinion is
that it works when people login and then suddenly it seems like the connection to the
printershare / server is dropped if people then logout and in again the connection is restored
and they can print again.

Info:
Client machines are winxp sp2 / DC is a server 2003 R2 / file and print is a server 2003 R2
All machines are in the same domain and on the same network segment.
The DC works as a printserver for another part of the office as well.

Hope you can help me

Best regards

what happens when they try to print to the printer if it is in this state?  error messages (on client or server)?

If you are in this state, and restart the spooler service on the client - does the issue go away?

Thanks,

justin
intermintant connections sometimes point to a poor quality cable or RJ45 connection. I would start with the simple things like changing the cable, just to make sure it is not a faulty cable.
This is all in the printer settings on the server and the user login.

The only easy way you can fix this is to delete the shares from the server, and disconnect (i.e. delete) the shares on the workstations.  Now remake the shares on the server, and reconnect each workstation to the new shares.  WHen you make them on the server, make sure there is no disconnect after so many minutes, and WATCH all other settings, there is a reason for this, but hard to find, quicker to remake the shares on the server, and reconnect to the new printer share form each workstation.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies, I allready tried all the above suggested resolutions, none of them worked i´m sorry to say.

to elaborate on the situation:

when connected directly to the server via remote access i can print server->printer at the same time the client machines can´t print and if i try to browse the shares on the server i´ll be asked user/password verification.
