Insufficient system resources...?

HP Pavilion a520n with XP/SP2.
512 mem, 160 G HD, 17 G used

Have this machine for service prior to installing DSL.
Ran all anti-spyware, virus, etc, small problems, cleaned.
Hooked up to broadband to check Windows Updates, 8 failed to install. Downloaded, but failed.
Looked back at history and Updates had failed back from 4/19.
Reason for failure is Insufficient system resources .... with Error code: 0x800705aa
Did all the obvious, checked Page file, chkdsk, ....!
Customer has been running AOL 9a with AOL branded McAfee installed but not updated. Uninstalled the mcAfee, shut down everything as detailed in many of the Google post, and here.
Went to install Belarc Advisor and got the same System resource error.
SIW also would not install.
Went to check with PC Pitstop and ActiveX wouldn't load and Pitstop wouldn't run.
I made 6 Recovery CD's (stupid machine has DVD+RW, all I have is DVD-R CD's) and can do a wipeout if necessary but don't want to.

Any fix that doesn't show up in any searches? Checked about the top 700 on Google, none applied or worked.

Hello cfourkays!

Ensure your pagefile is configured as follows...

Pagefile Optimization:

Initial Size:  1.5 times the amout of physical RAM
Maximum:  Twice the amount of the "Initial" size.

Performance Notes:  First and most important - Add more RAM.  Move the Pagefile off the disk that holds your system and boot partitions to another fast and dedicated hard disk.  Format the partition where the page file is placed with NTFS and a 4kb cluster size (which is in fact the default setting for an NTFS partition).   Have the initial size be at least 1.5 times bigger than the amount of physical RAM. Do NOT make the Pagefile smaller than the amount of physical RAM you've got installed on your system.

Done all that.
Wayyyy before I posted.
BTW, I should add, the machine works like a beast except for the mentioned problem.
Snaps to all open windows or files, no lag.
No problems going online.

simpswr,
Not applicable but thanks.
can you press cntrl alt delete and tell me the commited over charge
and what is the reason active x wont load is it being blocked if so go into internet explorer and change the security permissions to allow for or provide an error and maybe i could provide a fix.
That's another weird thing.
The Task manager opens to the "User" tab with no other tabs visable.
In fact, the only way to get rid of it is to reboot.
however, using the Process Explorer off a USB jump shows no problems. PE shows values a different way but 16% Commit charge and 1.5% CPU usage is no problem. System Idle process is hanging at about 1.5% so there's no "insufficient resources..". Misleading error report.
Browser Security is OK. ActiveX is set for prompt. I think that is also misleading.
Looked at "HijackThis" and didn't see anything.
Task Manager problem unrelated. Double clicked on blank space and tabs appeared.
After much Googleing and cleaning with no results, and no additional comments here, partioned HD, winged an Acronis TI trial download, Imaged drive to new D:. Formatted new C:, installed 6 disk System Restore and used Acronis to restore applications and data.
Posting this only for reference.
Requesting cancel on CS.
