Could not start the Server Service

Whenever I try to start the server service I'm given the following error message:

"Could not start the Server service on Local Computer.

Error 5: Access is denied."

This is an an XP Pro system w/ SP2. I do have administrative rights seeing as how this is my home PC. I'm just trying to get file and printer sharing working between a couple of computers but I can't seem to do it because of this server service error. Any help would be appreciated.

found this in a thread, same scenario as you are having now.

"I did a little research on my own and learned that the server service is actually started with a file called "lanmanserver.exe" I searched the registry for any mention of this file and found the following key. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver]
I compared the contents of this key with the same on a simalar computer on the same network (one without problems), but there was so much info inside that I could not determine if there was a deference between the two. There did not appear to be yet with nothing to lose I replaced this reg key with the "known good" one and rebooted the system. Upon reboot the "server" service started automaticly as did the "computer browser" service. Sorry guys, I did try all the posted answers, but I think I resolved this one on my own. Thank you all the same."
