How to edit a template

I'm working on a website at my job made by somebody else. The original files for the website no longer exists, only the files that are on the server. I'm trying to edit like 180 html files those before were based on a template. This site is a real estate site, which I need to edit adding and deleting houses and developments from it. There is a part on the template file that have like 20 developments names like this: development 1  development2  development3 , etc. (are like 3 rows of names and every name have a link to a file for the specific html for that development). I need to know how to add or delete a name on this paragraph and update automatically on all the other html files. (I did a find and replace, but dreamweaver convert the whole paragraph to a single line pointing only t one link).
I tried to use edit region, but no success. Also I copy that paragraph and converted to a template file (.dwt), but don´t know how to apply it to the other html files.

Thank's in advance for your help!

Hi Luigi,

If the original template is no longer available, you need to recreate it or detach all files from the template, which will allow normal editing.

You need to download all of the files from the server... Setup the site in dreamweaver... Then use find/replace to change all of the links you need to. Dreamweaver will update the whole site with the changes if you setup the site correctly.

Let us know.

Hi guys,

SKIN's advice will not work if the pages are based on a template.  The template code prevents all changes to the protected code from within Dreamweaver.

If the pages are detached from the template or are not based on a template, then it will work.

Jason1178 He says he has the files on the server but not the template, so it will work. All he has are the html files from the server, there is nothing keeping him from editing the files. Dreamweaver will do it no problem. Did you read his post?

Yes.  If the files have the template code and the links he wants to edit are protected by the template code, it will not work.  It is unclear to me if his links are in an editable region (in which case, your advice works) or part of the template (in which case your advice doesn't work).

jason1178 what exactly are you talking about. I have never seen an encrypted html file or any html file that you couldn't put in a text editor and change anything you want. I am not being cocky I just want to know what you are talking about.

Hi Guys,

Maybe I did not explain correctly my situation.

I can edit the links, but my problem is that I need right now to edit one by one on every page, because the template I suppose, no longer exists (like I said before, the original files are not anymore on a local computer) and also, the templates folder doesn't exist on the server.

I read a lot now about templates and I found that the best way to do what i need to do is ussing assets based on a library, I'm right?

SKIN,

Since we are in the Dreamweaver TA, I'm answering that way.  Dreamweaver locks the sections of template declared as protected from all editing by Dreamweaver.   Of course you can go outside of the program and edit that way, but it doesn't address the larger problem of how he can recreate his template file or use DW to fix the problem.

I'm not offended by being asked to clarify my responses :) ... at work, I tend to answer in shorthand and sometimes my answers need clarification!

-----------------------

Luigi,

If you can edit the links, then do as SKIN suggests and use the DW Find and Replace dialog to change things OR create a library item and F/R for that.  Personally, I find the Shared Assests interface cumbersome if I am the only person editing the site and prefer to use server side includes or scripting includes to get the same effect.  Shared Assests are good for sites that are going to be mangaled by people using Contribute...

jason1178 Good advice, but still needs to be done manually, is what I understood? Because I already used the F/R way, but not with the results I spected.

Can you post a sample page source code?  You should be able to do this with F/R...

Hi mrichmon,

Points should probably go to _SKIN_ as my answer is incomplete.  His answer works independently of DW.
