Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 not showing all content of the page or not showing it correctly. When I go to some web page with lots of graphics, not all is displayed.  They don’t even show blank boxes.

The whole page seems to have all the content but some images are smaller than they should be and backgrounds are either all in white or in grey. For example I know on this site that the background has a blue ting in different areas, but mine is just grey with black lettering. The font is large and its like it would appear in NotePad as opposed to Word say.

It seems that all images are there, but very small, but only some of them. I have never seen anything quite like this. By the way, if an image does not show, there is no outline box or red x to say it should be there.

History
The owner of the computer went and got himself a shed load of spywar on his computer. I put some Anti Spyware on it and got rid of it all. However the problem that remains is this.

Status
Windows XP SP2 is up to date. Anti Spyware up to date and shows no spyware, Norton 2005 up to date and no Viruses showing after scan.

What has been tried
Turned off Norton and Windows Firewalls
Turned off Popup blockers
Turned Off Norton Internet Security completely
Fiddled round with different Text sizes under View
Changed Encoding under view to every to Western European (Windows) - Western European – Cryllic (Windows)
Tried to repair using sfc /scannow
Tried re-installing IE using MS Aricle http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;318378
But with this I got the error still got the error “Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
Setup cannot continue.” Eventhough I used the reg hack HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} and changed it to “0”
In desperation I did an in-place upgrade http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/
But I still have the same problem

I do not want to blow it away and start from scratch as it is going to be too much work. There must be a way of fixing this but I am now at my wits end.

Please note that I will only be able to go to the customer’s site in the afternoons on some days, not all, and do not have the machine to hand, so forgive any delays when try things out.

I am sure that there are other things I have tried, so forgive me if I come back and say I have already tried it, but please ask any relevant questions that you feel I have not already explained.

Greetings, sjeffs !

1. Disable third party extensions. With IE open, go to Tools > Options > Advanced. Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Tools > Internet Optins > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Click OK.

3. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

4. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, antispyware, ad-blocker, popup blocker, and all Norton programs.

5. Repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

War1. I did all this before I posted. As I said I even bit the bullet and did an in-place upgrade.

What I don’t understand is in the article it advises you to save your favourites, cookies etc before you re-install IE or do an in place upgrade. I didn’t do that but after the in place upgrade all the favourites were still there, so it looks like the upgrade does not over write IE installation, which I thought it would.

The re-installation of IE by itself didn’t work because I got the error
“setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system. Setup cannot continue.”
Even though I used the reg hack HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} and changed it to “0”

I have some Screen shots, is there anywhere I can upload them for you guys to see?

By the way, another thing I have done is install the latest Java Version 5.0 Update 7 and installed also.

Thanx

Seamus
sjeffs,

If the cache is full, you may not be able to load webpages.  Make sure you have emptied the Temporary Internet Files.

Are you able to load the webpages using another browser, like Firefox?
http://www.getfirefox.com

Wondering if the problem is due to a slow internet connection.  Check with your ISP tech support if servers are having trouble.

To reinstail IE in Windows XP SP2, you need to reinstall SP2.  That is what the article that I posted above say.  Try something else first.  Go to Add and Remove Programs. Select Windows Components.  Uncheck Internet Explorer.  Click OK.  Reboot computer.  Go back to Add and Remove Programs > Windows Components. Check Internet Explorer.

Yes have deleted Temp Internet files and have also done the Add Remove Windows components.
Speed of Internat Connection is OK, they have 3 other machines going through the same router and they are OK

With regard to re-installing SP2 I obviously did not read the article fully. I will try that next
I have not tried Firefox yet but if all else fails then will give it a go.

Might not be able to get back to you on this until after the weekend, but will let you know how it goes.
Thanx
