SMTP not sending

We are on SBS 2003; the SMTP just starting hanging overnight. If you stop and start the service, it will send messages awaiting to be sent, but not any composed and sent to the Que. Nothing is really reporting any issues, there is something in the Event log with a red x "Topology discovery failed".

Topology discovery failed usually means it can't find the domain.
Make sure that your DNS is configured to use the SBS server ONLY for DNS. No external DNS servers should be anywhere in the network configuration.

we have a dual server setup; I'm not sure how that may factor in as the secondary server, which is a Win 2k box handles our outside traffic and website. Don't know if that makes a difference.

Shouldn't make any difference.
Active Directory relies on DNS. If you have external DNS servers in the network configuration then it cannot find the AD because those external DNS servers don't know anything about your (Windows) domain.
