Has the server been fully patched?
Windows and Exchange service pack?

Anything else on this machine that could be causing issues? Antivirus, Antispam etc?

Simon.

MS Updates reports that all patches are in place, I've checked Symantec AV and all appears ok, running spyware scan at present.  Since reboot the errors are no longer appearing but still unable to send/receive..

Are the messages sitting in the queues? If so, what does the queue message say?

Exchange_Admin asked in your other question which order you reinstalled IIS and Exchange. With my PE hat on, I have turned that question in to a pointer. Could you answer that point here?

Did you run the Internet Mail Wizard (or whatever its name is) to configure the email, or did you try to configure it manually?

IIS and then Exchange.  I just attempted to run the Exchange update again but it bombs out with the following error:

Exchange Server had previously been updated by a Service Pack. Reinstall the Microsoft Exchange Server Service Pack

Am I missing something something?  Surely I need to install the Exchange application and then the sp's?

I'm currently running Best Practises Analyser to see if that unearths anything.

The missing SMTP binding errors are a concern.
Have you attempted to reinstall IIS in the past?
It looks like Exchange hasn't got control over the SMTP virtual server.

You MIGHT get away with reinstalling Exchange. By that I mean choosing Exchange from Add/Remove programs and selecting the reinstall option. Then reapply the service pack.

Thanks Simon, unfortunately the reinstall bombs out with the following error during reinstall

Exchange Server had previously been updated by a Service Pack. Reinstall the Microsoft Exchange Server Service Pack

Any suggestions why this would occur?

I've resolved this problem by going through a reinstall of IIS and Exchange (3rd time lucky), not sure what to do with the points, I'll await advice from an administrator...
