Terminal Service Users can not open excel attachments from Outlook

Hi,

We have a Windows 2003 Server running Terminal Services. The terminal server has Office 2003 Profesional installed, which includes Excel and Outlook.

When a terminal server users tries to open an excel attachment from an email, Excel opens but loads an emtpy workbook.

If I put that user in the administrators group the attachments open as read-only.

It seems to me like an NTFS file permissions problem, but how do I find out which directory I need to change the permissions on so that excel attachments open correctly?

I don't think it's an NTFS or even TS ssue, but rather just one between Outlook and Excel.  Check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290852

Hi Jeff,

On further testing, it wasn't to do with permissions. As when I continued testing a normal users was able to open an excel attachment without being an administrator intermittently. I also noticed that even the administrator had this intermittent problem even when opening an xls file from a folder (therefore not even outlook related).

What I found was that if you opened excel first, whether by the icon or file, and minimized it, if you then opened the file you wanted it would work ok. Telling me it was something to do with excel loading.

I also noticed that when the excel screen loaded, all the menu bars would shift along and an addition menu would pop-in the middle. This was a plugin installed by a 3rd party ages ago before the problem started. But that lead me down a path.... There was also another pluggin installed, which was installed recently (by another 3rd party) and it would seem as thought the two pluggins don't like each other. Uninstalling one or both (not sure as I didn't do this) fixed the problem so I believe we're waiting for a fix or patch for the pluggins.

The other thing you might try doing is running the Office Repair feature which may reconcile the differences.

I don't have a problem with TechSoEasy receiving the points for taking the time to contribute to this issue, however for EE to display that one of the comments provided by TechSoEasy actually corrected the problem would be incorrect and misleading to other EE users that experience the same issue and are looking for a resolution.

The problem was down to 3rd party pluggins that had recently been upgraded. Uninstalling them rectified the problem with excel.

Why delete the question? As it was a problem that was solved. Which may help other EE users? That fact that I answered my own question doesn't make the question void does it?

Sorry, I've not been in this position before. I did look for a 'close question' button having posted my comment on 07/11/2006, but could not find anything, and it isn't made clear that you should contact Community Support TA requesting a refund. Like I said before, I don't have a problem with you receving the points for your input, providing it does not misslead other EE users in thinking your comment was the solution in this instance.
