MSN Messenger opens Outlook 2003, not hotmail.com

Ok, this may be complete rubbish because I know nothing about MSN but here goes:  A colleague of mine alleges that in the past they were able to access their Hotmail account emails via MSN Messenger.  Now, when they try to do this, instead of opening up www.hotmail.com it opens up their local installtion of Outlook 2003, which has no account information set up in it.

The user *alleges* that this has spontaenoiusly happened without any action on their part!

If MSN can connect to either Hotmail or Outlook how do you switch between the two?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Dear davidcharge,

MSN Messenger should only access Hotmail if the user is registered with it, meaning @hotmail.co.uk; @hotmail.com; @msn.com etc. If the user has another email type - i.e. @gmail.com - then it will open the local emailing program, which in your case is Outlook 2003. You can also try updating your MSN to Windows Live Messenger (http://messenger.msn.com)?

If you have a hotmail account, then it could be MSN Messenger acting up. After updating to the new MSN Messenger - Windows Live - it should remove most of the previous settings. Also, I don't think you can configure MSN to connect to the Inbox using either Hotmail or Outlook as it is automated. Plus, Windows Live Messenger is a really good program anyway, so even if it doesn't work - at least you'll be up-to-date with the best messaging program out there! :)

Although, I may be wrong - about the update fixing it.

Hope this Windows Live Messenger update helps you - GL
