I am so fed up with the crappy line of Linksys products. Anywhere from buggy firmware to hardware failure I’ve seem them all in a wide range of products. I’ve gone through 2 AP (WRTGs), 1 VoIP Phone, 1 Wireless Camera and now my Cable Modem. These are all personal products, but I’ve had numerous clients with major complaints. Bottom line, they ALMOST work.
</rant>

Anyways, I am looking for a documented suggestion for a fast & reliable cable modem that will mesh well with Comcast. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, IL
The only request I have is that you exclude RCA and Linksys from your list.

BTW I'm makring this question 500 because it is extremely urgent.

Here’s tracert to google, to help with my location. First 2 are omitted:

Not sure what type of issues your having but I am with Comcast and use Motorola with no issues what so ever

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/sb5101/

It has been rock solid for over a year now. Is fully supported ad approved by Comcast and probably the most widely used also. It is available at most Best Buy , Circuit City etc or through Comcast at least in my area.

Hpe that Helps

Hladamjr,

The issues aren't Comcast related, they're modem related.

Now that you bring up Motorola, whats the difference between the SB5100, SB5101, SB5120?
Pricewise, they're around the same ballpark. It seems that SB100 is the most pricey.
And which one do you recommend? Please document your pick.

Thanks.

They are basically the same modem with the  exception that the 5120 has software you can install to boost performance:

Enhanced with TurboDOX™ Bandwidth Optimization Software: can further boost download speeds by up to 20 times*

The  5120 is the newer of the two and is probably all you'll find available in stores these days. It runs around $80 before rebates which usually bring it to $60.

"TurboDOX™ Bandwidth Optimization Software" sounds like some bullshit caching scheme, is that the case?

It is really just a 5101 with this added. I wouldn't call it BS  as it but refer to it more as marketing As you probably know manufacturers are always updating models and that is what this is in reality. It is an updated 5101 with some internal software updates ( enhancements added to (one up)  the competition in an effort to boost sales or market share.  It is not something you install on the PC. It is internal software in the modem on a chip. Nothing to install or should I say not an option to use or not use. Basically it is just an enhancement to the older model. I wouldn't hesitate a second in getting it and highly recommend the Motorola's over anything else.

I think I mentioned it before that you'll probably only be able to find or get the 5120 unless somebody has a 5101 on the left  on the shelf.

I just read some things about TurboDOX that seem interesting. I suppose it blocks repetitive ACKs, therefore freeing up bandwidth. Its also a TI chipset which makes the Motorola SURFBoard 5120 the winner. The Broadcom chipsets for cable modems don't seem that great IMHO.

Since nobody else has anything else to say the 5120 it is.

Thanks.
