lanmanserver service is Stopped

We are running SBS 2003 on an IBM X236 series server.  Every so often (the duration will rnage between a few days and a few weeks) I received a lanmanserver service is Stopped alert via e-mail.  Once I receive this, the machine locks all inbound file, RAS, web and Exchange connections.  Power cycling the server fixes the problem until the next time it appears.  I can't seem to find any KB articles about this particular issue.

When i receive the e-mail alert, the following event is logged in the system log:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      Service Control Manager
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      7032

Description:

Well, I'm sure there is an apparent reason.  :-)  We just have to find it.

You've done a few updates since the last posting... that should be good.  Other than eliminating one of your NICs... I generally prefer a 2 NIC config.  But that's another issue.

Do you have any other servers on your network?

I'm glad other people are having the issue...  Hopefully that will make it easier to troubleshoot!  The problem occured again this morning.

Our machine does have 2 NIC's (broadcom) and is the only server on the network.

After looking at the info from both sysetminfo prompts, it is interesting to note that both machines are sbs2003 dual processor machines.

Any suggestions on the next testing steps?

If it helps we are running the following
SBS (including exchange)
Symantec Corp AV
Veritas / Symantec Backup Exec
We also have several devices using active sync.

oh, shoot, I didn't even realize that the second posting was from someone else...

JABevan, sorry, but you can't hijack someone elses question.  But you can assist in helping to troubleshoot if you like... we can only focus on one problem though, because the lanmanserver issue could be caused by multiple things.

nwcc_seattle,

It looks as though you may not have correctly installed SBS Service Pack 1, and you also seem to be missing a tremendous amount of updates that should be installed.  As you can see by JABevan's listing, there is quite a difference.  Normally, I'd expect to see well over 100 patches listed... so please check to make sure that you've got them all.

Please also verify that you installed SP1 according to the prescribed methods (http://sbsurl.com/sp1)

We discovered that WSUS was limting the amount of updates that were installed.  After fixing this we applied the rest of the updates, however the problem still remains.

My comment still stands, that I beleive you haven't correctly installed SBS Service Pack 1.  It is not an automated installation that would come down by WSUS.  Please review the link I provided above and be sure you follow all steps.

I'm quite sure that this is the case because of information missing from your systeminfo output.
