Odd Frontpage Server Extension Problem

I have II6 with FPSE2002 exentions installed.  Im also runnign Ipswitch's wsftp server for FTP access.  My FPSE 2002 entension version that is running is 5.0.2.6790.  Im hosting multiple domains on here and a user uploaded their website using fronpage 2003 and published through ftp connection and that domain now states that it has FPSE 6.0.2.6353 installed.  If I right click the domain and choose properties from the IIS MMC I dont have the fpse tab like usual.  In the task menu there are no options at all for fpse ...I should at least have remove and recalculate options in the task menu.  The other 9 domains have fpse 2002 extensions installed but are at version 5.0.2.6790 and I can get to the administration on those domains just fine.

How is it that this site's fpse got so messed up.  The user doesnt have permissions to install anything.  They do have modify perms on their web root folder.

I have googled this verison thing to death and not much pops up other than to reinstall fspe ...which i did and the error still persists.

Hi,

This is a typical problem when the service.cnf file of FPSE contains invalid information.

Try the following:
- Go to the _vti_pvt folder of the site
- Open notepad
- Drag and drop the service file (service.cnf) into the notepad
- Check the lines:
vti_webservertype: if the line contains vti_webservertype:SR|diskweb, change the same to vti_webservertype:SR|msiis
vti_extenderversion:SR|5.0.2.6790 - if the line contains any other number than vti_extenderversion:SR|5.0.2.6790 modify the same to the correct version.
- Save the file and exit
- Stop and start the site
- The FPSE options should now be available

Please let me know the results.

Regards,
Chaitanya

This worked.  I can now get to the administration section and the fpse2002 tab shows up under properties of the website in the iis mmc.

I think the user published the site with an ftp client instead of using frontpage2003's publish utility.  None of the forms on his site work...they keep complaining about fpse not installed.

How was is it that the user has a newer version of frontpage server extensions than I do on the server?  I cannot find anything on ms's site or google for what product fpse version 6.0.2.xxxx belongs to.

Hi,

There is no version as 6.0.2.xxx.
The versions available for FPSE on Windows Servers are listed below:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnservext02/fpse2002win.asp?frame=true

The wrong version is displayed if the service.cnf file contains invalid values or as you rightly said if the user has copied the contents using FTP and not published.
I would recommend publishing the site from Frontpage as Forms and many more components need FPSE running on the server.

Note: please mark the the answer as accepted if I have answered your query.

Regards,
Chaitanya.
