Running SBS 2003 Standard and CEICW locks up on the final configuration screen - the screen with progress bars at the bottom. Any ideas why this happens? Email & internet connections seem to be working OK.

The icwlog.txt file stopped at the line "calling GetDomainControllerNames () ". On other runs of CEICW the next line is normally "Call To GetDomainControllerNames () returned OK". It seems to have stopped when it tried to Get Domain Controller Name?

If that's where it's quitting you probably have a problem with your Active Directory configuration.  How long ago did you install this server?

The installation was about 3 months ago. I took a chance and rebooted the server without CEICW finishing (I waited 24 hours). After booting up, my administrator logins can't get in. Error message: "You are not authorized to log in interactively". I can't login at the console but I can use Remote Desktop and log in remotely.

Oh, that's why the log stopped there.  The reason you can't log on locally is because you are probably a member of the Domain Power Users Group.  If you are an administrator you shouldn't be a member of that group.

At any rate, please rerun the CEICW, and on the last screen click that says "Completing the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard, copy all of the text in that describes the changes that will be made and post it back here.  Click Cancel to avoid the lock-up again.

Here's CEICW text:

Connection type: broadband connection using  a local router device with an IP address
Router connection information:
Local IP address of the router: 192.168.0.1
      Preferred DNS server: 207.87.221.2
      Alternate DNS server: 150.159.216.206

The firewall on your computer running Small Business Server could not be configured. You must configure a firewall to secure your local network from the Internet. For more information about configuring firewall settings for your Small Business Server network, see Help and Support.
Web services on your server's default Web site to be available through the firewall to users on the Internet:
      Outlook Web Access
      Remote Web Workplace
      Server performance and usage reports
      Outlook Mobile Access
      Outlook via the Internet
      Windows SharePoint Services intranet site
      Business Web site (wwwroot)

Do not change current Web server certificate
Email: Do not change Exchange configuration for Internet e-mail.

For more detailed information about the configurations performed by this wizard, click the link at the bottom of this page to open Icwdetails.htm in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Networking\Icw.
Note: each time the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard is run, a new .htm file is automatically generated to preserve the previous settings. For example, Icwdetails1.htm, Icwdetails2.htm, and so on.

Also, can you please post a complete IPCONFIG /ALL from the server?

I just want to be sure that everything is set okay...

Did you check to see if you have made your administrator login a member of the Domain Power Users Group?  (Or Remote Operators Group, which has Power Users Group as a nested member).

I did check the Power Users - I'm not a member.

Netopia router is an R910 model.

I have found that the all the User Rights Assignments in the Default Domain Security Settings are "undefined" now with the exception of the Allow Logon through Terminal Services. I have been able to access the server through Remote Desktop, fortunately. I couldn't login at the console until I defined the Allow Logon Locally policy and gave myself permission to login. Is there a wizard to use to reset those User Rights Assignments that are undefined in  the Default Domain Security Settings? (I'm sure they were not undefined the last time I looked at them).

Oops! There is mistake in my last post. Please substitute: "Access This Computer From The Network" for the phrase "Allow Logon Locally" in the above post.

Where are you looking for those, in the Administrative Tools > Domain Security Policy > Default Domain Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment?  Because ALL of those should be set to Not Defined.

You should not change anything in that area.  All domain policies should be set in the Group Policy Management Console... and generally you don't need to set anything to get things to work correctly.

At this point, since I'm not sure what you have modified from the default configuration, please take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823659 to see if you can make sure that all settings are as they should be.

Many new permission problems are now popping up and the our website is having trouble accessing its databases files. Should I just give in and reinstall SBS 2003? I have network with less than 10 users.

The popular opinion is that it takes at least three times installing SBS before one gets it right... so... this time... get yourself a good manual (I like http://sbsurl.com/best which will guide you through the process so you don't start configuring things that shouldn't be configured).  But at the very least, follow the Microsoft Getting Started Guide:  http://sbsurl.com/start

I'm still not sure why CEICW locked up originally. Maybe because I ran it while logged in as my account with Administrtative privileges and not the built-in Administrator account. But I got things back to normal:

Re-ran CEICW successfully.

In Administrative Tools > Domain Security Policy > Default Domain Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment I reset "Access This Computer From The Network "to include "Domain Users". It had been set to include only my account with Administrtative privileges, and no else could access the servers from the network. Once the new setting propogated, users could again access files on the network and all database features on our website functioned normally again.

Thanks Jeff.

You don't have to run it with the built-in administrator account... unless you've modified the account you made to be in other groups which have restrictions.

You should not have had to change the default domain security policy.  In fact, that should be 'Not Defined" at that level.  That is the DOMAIN CONTROLLER security policy and you've now permitted non administrators to log on to the server.

All user accounts should be configured with the Add-User wizard using the appropriate user template for the security level.  If you need to reapply security settings to a user, you would just run the "change user permissions' wizard.  If you created users through ADUC instead, and put them in the wrong OU's this would also cause access problems.  All users must stay in MyBusiness\Users\SBSUsers OU.
