Critical: Unable to get all RR's of the zone <zone name goes here>/IN with error -25

Hello all,

My secondary DNS server shows the error mentioned in the subject line.  I
only started seeing this periodically since the server was migrated to NW65
SP5.  The primary DNS server is still NW6 SP5 and does not experience this
error message.

NSLOOKUP shows that the secondary DNS server with the error message is still
responding to DNS requests.  Any idea what the error is trying to tell me?
I saw similar TIDs, but did not see anything referencing the "error -25"
portion.

Thanks.

Is it safe to assume you're using the latest Java DNS/DHCP console?

My gut says it may be a DNS version issue, since NAMED.NLM on NW6SP5 is still bind 8 based IIRC, and NAMED.NLM on NW65SP5 is based on BIND 9.

Does this only show up on load of NAMED?  How does the memory situation look on the 6.5 server? (error 25 is a common "ran out of memory" type  error in POSIX systems.)

If it's not  a memory thing, then I'd guess it's a version thing and you should make your 6.5 server the primary authoritative.

You're not setting up the 6.5 server with its own set of objects, right - you're just assigning that server as an authoritative server for the zone?

Oh, and you MAY want to export your zone and DHCP records to files, blow away the entire DNS/DHCP configuration, and start fresh, creating the DNS/DHCP objects from the 6.5 server console with DNIPINST -F, and then re-importing the zone and DHCP records.  That should take care of any differences in BIND versions, as well as any potential corruption in DNS/DHCP objects, IMHO.

This  TID is for NW5, but I've used it  for fixing  NW6 locator object issues.   Just make sure you do NOT do the  'dnipinst -r" command!!!

I am assuming here, that you have moved the Master of [Root] to the 6.5 server like you should have, and it's not still on the NW6 server...

Ok, finally back at this.

Your assumptions are all correct...latest console, just an authoritative server for the zone, correct Master locations, etc.

On load of NAMED, it actually looks fine.  Only after awhile does it produce the errors on the console screen.  I think you're correct with the memory issue.  The 6.5 server is hosted in VMware and only has 1GB memory allocated.  Also, we use the dynamic settings to create A records for our DHCP clients.  It seems that whenever anybody VPNs in, it creates another DNS record "computerName00ab2903482080" for example.  I knew this was the case but I have not cleaned these out in a long time, and I literally deleted thousands of DNS records the last few days to clean that out.  We're only a 400-user network, so needless to say, that was a lot of junk out there! :)  I'm monitoring now to see if that helps at all.
