I have acquired an old-ish tape drive that takes DDS-3 type tapes that I am hoping to use for back-ups on my home PC. What software do I need for this (preferably free)?

If You can get a windows driver for the tape drive, then NTBACKUP should handle it - NTBackup is on XP Pro, and, if you have a Retail or Upgrade copy of XP Home it's available on CD.  Otherwise, just search google for ntbackup.msi - it's a quick download on most connections and then double click to install.  You should then find it in the Acessors program group, System Tools sub group.

Thanks, I will try plugging it in see if XP recognises it and finds drivers for it.

Just about any DDS type tape drive should be recognized by Windows and supported by NTBACKUP.

Scale it in WD Gold

With up to ten times the workload capacity of desktop drives, WD Gold hard drives employ advanced technology to deliver among the best in reliability, capacity, power efficiency and performance.

Ah, should've checked this before I posted.
The tape drive has a 50 pin connection, Does this mean this is a SCSI drive and can't be connected to my IDE cable in my PC? Is there any way round this?

A 50-pin connector is SCSI.  You will need a SCSI controller.  This is not able to be plugged into an IDE controller.
