IMHO, beyond the obvious answer of having a good SEO page that shows your work, you should market your work using many of the same marketing ploys that those with a product to sell use.  Check out Levinson's Guerilla Marketing books, do some demo projects for local non-profits, join a local chamber of commerce or other opportunity to meet and greet others, do some cold calling of small, local businesses that you know don't have websites, run ads in cheap local papers (something like your local computer shopper), etc.

Eye-catchers on the conference table

Challenge: The i-unit group was not satisfied with the audio quality during remote meetings. They were looking for a portable solution with excellent audio quality for use in their conference room but also at their client’s offices.

You can always just create multiple pages in different designs to show off your work, but I'm a believer that content and function are important.  Find a local charity that you like and see if they have a web site.  If they don't, create one for them.  Of course, if you pick a charity that you care about, the quality of your work (and the content of the site) will be better.  As an example, I'm on a committee to improve the downtown area.  They needed a place to post minutes from their board meetings, etc. so I made up a simple page (olympiapbia.org if you're interested).  Then I added the ASP coding and a database so folks could leave their comments...something their previous website did not have.  The design for this site is crappy, but then I'm not selling my services so I just wanted something functional and simple.  If your work is really outstanding, you could probably fetch a little cash from them for maintaining their sites.
