Frontpage webs not viewable in dreamweaver

I'm managing a ton of files on one of our web servers (I'm a web designer/programmer) not a server admin and I've been using dreamweaver 8 to manage all of the folders. Our web server has some more primitive web folders developed by people using frontpage and those frontpage webs don't seem to be viewable in my dreamweaver file explorer tab. So... some of the folders (webs) won't show up within the site (wwwroot server folder).

I've created seperate sites and specified the "hidden" folders directly and can view them then but not if they are within another site.

Hi cedcsg,

I know that FrontPage sets up its own security for each of the webs (the scripts in _vti_bin/) and that may prevent a simple DW connection from seeing certain things.   There is not a lot you can do about this in DW.

I'm also not sure that DW is the best tool to manage all the folders across multiple virtual domains or sites.  DW is meant to be configured as a one site/one root directory sort of thing.

In any event, what is your question?

Here is a fairly complete discussion of the FrontPage security model:

Jason,

My question exactly is, "How can I have DW see files that are secured by FrontPage Web Securities?"

The link you provided taught me a lot about what exactly the permissions are and how they are set up, but does anyone know how to solve my problem rather than having to set up seperate "Sites" for each folder I would like to access in DW?

Thanks.

For the one master site you are trying to use, are you logging in as the root user for the server?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by root user? I have administrative peermissions to my user account if that helps. I can see them fine when I set a site up directly to that folder. I just can't see a "frontpage web" based folder in my master site which basically just lists all folders in the wwwroot folder on the webserver.

Right, because those FP sites have their own users and the way the permissions are set, you can't see them.

The problem here is not a Dreamweaver one.  The problem is essentially a server permission problem coupled with you using DW in an unintended way.

Is this a windows server or a *nix server?

windows server most likely win2k3 but could also be a win2k server.  Is there a way to change the FP permissions on the folders?  Or a way to change the folder permissions on the server?

You can change the folder permissions on the server, however, I don't know the exact method (I'm a *nix guy).  I'm almost certain this is the problem.
