Internet Explorer hangs with windowsupdate

Hi,

I had to repair my XP pro installation from the original CD.  I'm back at SP1 with no updates.  Everytime I try to access windowsupdate.microsoft.com with IE, the browser hangs and CPU usage spikes to 100%.

My only guess is some of the activex controls I downloaded previously for windows update are malfunctioning, I'd like to just remove these from IE and allow them to be redownloaded.  Can someone help me do this?  I found a tool 'xcavate' to supposely do this, but it looks like it loaded all COM components on the computer, not just IE ones.  I'm a bit scared to proceed with it.

Thanks,
--Michael

You may want to download SP2 first and install that before you do anything else http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

to remove activeX controls http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154850/

Thanks for the first link, I figured SP2 was available like that, but I could never find the proper link.  After installing it I'm able to access windows update and a few other minor problems were fixed as well.

Glad to hear it

For future reference if you do a repair on Windows with SP2 you need a CD with SP2 slipstreamed (another topic) to get the best results

Good luck
