Horde webmail fatal database error

Here's the situation:  I updated Plesk on my server to version 7.6 from 7.56.  It put a second instance of mySQL on my computer, so I uninstalled the second instance, which made my database driven websites work again.  However, Horde (apache) mail doesn't work anymore.  I've been searching for a solution, but everything I've found is not working.  Here is the error I get when trying to access a webmail account:

A fatal error has occurred
DB Error: connect failed
Details have been logged for the administrator.

The log initially gave me this error:

Jul 10 13:55:24 HORDE [emergency] [horde] DB Error: connect failed:  [nativecode=Access denied for user 'horde'@'localhost' (using password: YES)] ** Array [on line 1259 of "C:\Inetpub\vhosts\webmail\horde\lib\Horde\DataTree\sql.php"]

Then after I setup a horde user and gave it almost all privileges, it gave me this error:

Jul 10 20:50:35 HORDE [emergency] [horde] DB Error: connect failed:  [nativecode=Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client] ** Array [on line 1259 of "C:\Inetpub\vhosts\webmail\horde\lib\Horde\DataTree\sql.php"]

I'm using mySQL 5.0.  Any help would be great.  Is it a privilege error or is something missing from a file or wrong in a config file?

Thanks,
drdarby

HERE's the config file:
<?php
/**

 * This file contains intial configuration settings for Horde.
 * It contains basic settings that allow you to log into Horde and
 * complete the configuration with configuration interface. The first
 * change you should do is to select a sensible authentication driver
 * and administrator user name.
 *
 * The only settings that might need changes if you are not running
 * Horde in a "default" setup are documented below.
 *
 * Strings should be enclosed in 'quotes'.
 * Integers should be given literally (without quotes).
 * Boolean values may be true or false (never quotes).
 *

//   0 - Assume that we are not using SSL and never generate https URLS.
//   1 - Assume that we are using SSL and always generate https URLS.
//       NOTE: If you do this, you MUST hardcode the correct HTTPS port
//       number in $conf['server']['port'] below. Otherwise Horde will

sounds like the database is using the new password hashing, and the client is using the old style.

check out this and see if that helps resolve it.
