"Recent" Contains all the documents that you have recently accessed.  it is used to populate the "recently used documents" menu on the start menu.  Its also useful for locating files that you recently used and can no longer find.

Programs like microsoft word also dump their lists of recently used files in there so that when you re-open a program like word and click "file", the recelty used file list is there.
