Need recommendations for a suitable copy utility

Hello,

I am working in a Chinese Windows 2000 Professional environment and often need to copy relatively large amount of data (30GB or more) from one drive to another. This task can be done by the windows explorer. However, as the process usually takes a long time (several hours to several days) to complete, a bit unstability in the Windows system may cause the whole process to abort and I cannot resume the copying from the terminated point.

Is there any suitable copy utility in the market that specialises in handling the copy job. So that the copy task can be automated by specifying the source directory and the target directory and the utility would do the whole copy process, make a clear log file for me, let me to resume copying from the terminated point in case of system errors. Moreover, it's best if the utility can understand chinese (traditional and simplified) file names.

In addition, I may sometimes transfer files between different file systems (e.g. NTFS to FAT32, FAT32 to ext2). It would be better if the copy utility could preserve as many attributes of the files as it could throughout the copy process.

I do not mean here a backup utility which copy the source directory to a target FILE as I do just need a direct copy utility.

     Thanks for any recommendation.

yes, it can be run on Windows 2000 platform also. simply get the resource kit from the first link above, and install it. you can simply copy the robocopy.exe to other computers then.

Hello angelIII,

The downloaded Resource Kit cannot be installed in a Windows 2000 Professional environment. It prompts me that it should be installed in a Windows XP or Windows 2003 platform. So I cannot just extract the Robocoy program from the Resource Kit.

Could I just download the Robocopy program for use ?

Hello angelIII,

I have a Yahoo Geocities Account. The details are as follows :

URL : http://hk.geocities.com/experts_tkw/
User : experts_tkw
Password : tkw123

It would be great if I could have the RoboCopy program uploaded there. This is a temporary account and I would clear it later.

     Thanks for your help.

Robocopy is also in the NT4 and Windows 2000 resource kits if you can find those anywhere though it is an older version...

Hello angelIII,

Oh, Sorry ! I forget that this is a Chinese webpage. Perhaps I shall extract Robocopy later.

I have just cleaned up the mentioned account.

     Thanks for all your comments.
