Hi there

I need to be able to email from my webapp, but there is a catch. I need greater functioanlity than the mailto: command, but still do what it does.

I have tried some of the jsp email apps, they work fine, but what my client has requested is that the still send the messages from their outlook so as to keep a record of their send items in their personal folders.

So what i need to be able to do is send an email from my applcation with the email address, subject automatically entered into my outlook (just like mailto does) along with the body of the email (which could be quite long, therefore mailto wouldnt suffice) Also i would also like to be able to add attachements automatically if this is possible.

Any ideas??

The basic answer is you can't. The mailto command requires the presence of a client mail program which you cannot guarantee. If the user doesn't have Outlook or has set it up so that it does not respond to mailto, then you are out of luck. And there are various shortfalls of the command as you have noticed.

The advanced answer is you do it yourself. Using a basic email servlet or something similar to this http://javaalmanac.com/egs/javax.mail/SendApp.html you send an email to the destination but also to the user who is sending the email. Therefore they have arecord of the email. This also allows complete control of the subject, email body and any email attachments.
