removing setup files for winxp loaded on top of win 98se

I have a customer who attempted to load WinXP on top of Win98SE on a Dell laptop. Now when booting up the screen appears with an apparent dual boot option Windows XP setup or Windows. If Windows is not selected, the laptop boots into WindowsXP setup. Is there an easy way to get rid of these XP setup files and eliminate the dual boot? I found WinNT setup files in Windows explorer and sent them to the recycle bin, buit it still goes to a dual boot screen on start up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciatede. I am trying to avoid wiping the hard drive and reloading Windows 98.
Thanks.
