Archiving 10 mails OK, archiving 200 mails = error message

This is the second time a user has a problem to archive over100-200 mails.

When he selects 5-10 mails he can archive without any problem.
The moment he selects over 100 mails ( I don't know the exact number it can be 150 or 200) the well known error message appears:
Cannot archive.......Would you like to change the archive settings?  (Yes/No)

Is there a limit for the numbers of mails can be archived at the same time?

Only the limit on the user's hard drive.  I've done several thousand. :)  But I will qualify that, I didn't do them manually.

What is notes version?
What is the full path to the archive database?
Is there some other part of the error that goes between: "Cannot Archive" and "Would you like to change..."

Open the archive settings for the database, and check the settings. (If the user's archive is on the server, then the user needs permission to write to the server, if the archive is NOT located in the Notes Data Directory, then the path is too long.  Depending on the version of notes, R5 objects to archiving to local from the SERVER mail file.  R5 like to only archive from a local database to a local archive)

Other possibilities:
 go to the user's log.nsf and read the misc events and see what errors are being thrown.. like, insufficient permissions to run the archive agent..

More when you provide additional information. :)

The user has Lotus R6 and he has a notebook.
The program is on the C drive and the archive is on the D drive D:\Archive\a_xxx.nsf

He's using the Local replica of his mailfile.

I can't check his log file because that option isn't selected under the database properties.

Every user has log.nsf created on a notes install.  It won't be under database properties, do file>>databse>>open and select local server, log.nsf.  Wealth of information including agent run errors.

I checked his log file but found nothing that would apply to an error in connection with the archiving process.

The only error I saw refers the web because it says: Cannot open the page....Operation stopped at your request.

The log file contains almost already the same:

Ok, can you write down the archive settings here?  

Is the D drive a local or network drive?  If it is a network drive, I assume it is mapped?  
What is the ACL settings for the archive mail file?  Is this archive mail file left over from a previous version of Notes, I wonder?

Try zipping that archive and then opening settings and creating a new local archive.

Also, check File>>Preferences>> User Preferences and see if local scheduled agents are enabled.

The D drive is a local drive. The user travels many times and therefore he's the archive on his notebook and not on the server.

The ACL setting of the archive is the same as of the actual mailbox.
Default, LocalDomainServers, OtherDomainServers, Mailserver, Notes Administrator and the user himself.

The local scheduled agents are enabled for every user.

He'd the same archive when he had R5 (Now R6)

Ah, the design for the archive is wrong!   People forget to upgrade both the design AND the folders of the archive database, so, what's happening is that the R5 database is still the old R5 engine and probably defaulting to 1gb space, which is why it is limiting the number of documents.

I would just go to the archive settings in the main mail file and set a NEW archive name, maybe with the year: a_name2006.nsf, and start with a new, fresh database..

Make sure that all the local mail templates are upgraded and that the local mail file is inheriting from an R6 mail template.  

You also want to replace the design on the LOCAL mailfile File>>Database>>Replace Design and then select the name of the correct R6 mail file, and also run the folder upgrade on that mail file.
