Get Reference to Controls in Other Applications (VB or C#)

Can someone tell me how to get a reference to a control in a different application so I can read and write data?  In other words, say you have standard Windows application (something non-Microsoft, so simple MS automation won't work) and you want to be able to read and write data to a particular textbox control.  How is this done?  Thanks!
