Display settings shows secondary monitor but only one monitor is connected

My ex-brother-in-law wants dual monitors on his Dell 8400. The 8400 has a radeon x300 Series PCI Express x16 card currently. When I went to the display settings, it is already showing a #1 monitor and a #2 monitor. Strangely they both show to be the Radeon card. I tried uninstalling #2 but on reboot, it reinstalls #2. Not sure what this is all about! I have an extra monitor and a Diamond Stealth 64 Vision 968 pci that I want to set up. I went on with installing the Stealth but could never get it to work. In device manager, it has the ole yellow exclamation mark and states that the device cannot be started, error code 10. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I setup dual monitors on my Dell 8250 without a problem but I have not figured his 8400 out.

The x300se should have 2 video outputs 1 vga and 1 dvi, you shouldnt need to add a pci card to get dual monitors. I had an x600 on a laptop(replaced with a 6800), and it did the same thing showed a 2nd monitor when an external wasnt plugged in(also my room mate has an x300 that shows the same thing) and when i plugged in the external it worked fine just extend the desktop in the display properties or if you want to clone you have to go into the advanced setting in display prperties but it should work either way.

I assume that I need an adapter to plug the 2nd monitor into the dvi?

Yes a dvi to vga adapter, it should have shipped with one.
