IBM T30 - Going into Standby Unexpectedly

I am doing a training - one of the student Laptops is going into standby unexpectedly every few seconds to minutes.  The batteries were pulled for shipping.  Defnitely standby - Fn-F4 brings it back out.  I have looked at power schemes and turned everything off.  Does not matter if you are active or idle - shuts self down.  But does come right back up. What else can I look at besides power?  Even monitor is not showing anything.

Can you boot the unit into safe mode or with a bootable CD (like a Knoppix disk or similar) and see if the behaviour is the same? If so, that would indicate hardware or BIOS problems/settings; if not, you're looking at some kind of windows software intervention.

Problem is I don't have a CD or anything... These things were shipped here..and I am just stuck trying to diagnose and fix problems without tools - but I will go up in Safe Mode and see what happens...  Thanks for taking time to respond...

Knoppix is a download (an .iso) and you burn the CD yourself. Very useful tool: http://www.knoppix.org/
