DVD/CD burner will not recognize a disk

I've run non-destructive recoveries twice and I know the burner works, but after installing Nero #6 and its two updates, I lose the ability to recognize dvd/cd blanks or otherwise.  My dvd-rom works though.  I've gone to regedit and, with DELFXPFiles, cleaned the registry, i.e.--according to below instructions.

Step 1: Remove the virtual drive program temporarily.

========

1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click on Add or Remove Programs.

3. In the program list, please select PowerISO and click Remove.

4. Please also remove Nero6 program and all the other CD burning related programs.

Step 2: Check related registry keys.

========

1. Click Start, click Run, type "REGEDIT" (without the quotation marks) and click OK.

2. On the left pane of the Registry Editor, please navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

3. Double-click on the key IDE to expand it.

4. Right-click on the sub-key CdRomHP_DVD_Writer_400c______________________KH27____ and select Permissions.

5. Click Add button, type "everyone" (without the quotation marks) and click OK.

6. In Group or user names list, please make sure that Everyone has been selected and then check the Full Control box under Allow column.

7. Click Advanced button, in Permissions tab, please check the option "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" and click OK.

8. Right-click on the key CdRomHP_DVD_Writer_400c______________________KH27____ and select Delete. Please click Yes to confirm the operation.

9. Please repeat the steps from step 4 to step 8 to delete the following sub-keys under IDE key.

CdRomIDE-DVD_ROM_16x_________________________HD14____

Step 3: Check filter keys.

=======

1. Click Start, click Run, type "REGEDIT" (without the quotation marks) and click OK.

2. On the left pane of the Registry Editor, please navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. Double-click on the key {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to expand it.

4. Right-click on the sub-key 0000 and click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the operation.

5. Then please also delete the following sub-keys under key {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

0001

6. In the left pane, please click the key {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to highlight it.

7. In the right pane, please right-click on the item below and select Delete to delete them.

Moreover, I've run Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard to no avail.  Bottom line is that if I do a non-destructive or destructive recovery I regain the ability for my burner to work.  So it's functional.  Yet, once I install Nero 6--and then it works for a while--but I eventually lose the right to use my burner.  What's happening?

do not use Nero, use Roxio EZ CD/DVD builder.  I gave up on Nero about a year ago, it was great for CDs, but now I do mostly DVDs, it has become the most unreliable program for burning to DVD.  SO I trashed it, went to Roxio, and everything has been working perfectly since removing Nero.

Have you checked if Nero is regestered?<, unregestered it will not work.
was Nero bundelled with this cd/dvd burner?<< unless you buy the burning rom.

Have you checked if the ide cables are ok?
Does the rom drive spin?
Maybe rom drive is faulty and the update just happen to co-incide.
If you exceeded the dvd regeon more than 4 allowable times?
 to burn a dvd from another country more than 4 times then you rom drive is fried.
Do you have Nero  incd installed?

I'm gonna follow your instructions.  I thought I might add that this morning I found a cure that was short lived, i.e. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529.  I've since installed Azureus (p2p software) and tried to install XP Codec.  Deleted the codec, repaired Nero 7, and just realized that when I insert a DVD+R blank into my hp dvd writer / cd-writer combo, which in My Computer reads or is identified as DVD/CD-RW Drive (E:), which is the burner, when I insert the DVD blank, that Drive, whirs and whirles, then becomes CD Drive (E:).  Yet, it's a DVD blank in there.  Can you figure?

Mordido, in this previous question of yours, you said that you found the solution, but it was one of my links that I had previously given you.  So what is the status of that question?

When I go to Step 3: Check filter keys, above, there's a "lower Filte" but no "Upper Filter" or no "Upper Filter_1."
