Photoshop 7: Change image color to exact hex or RGB value
You think this would be simple, but I cannot find any answers online about this one.

I have an image in a layer. I need to change the color to an exact hex value (or the RGB equivalent).

I can use the tools under "Images->Adjustments" to change the color, but these are operated by sliders mostly, and although I can get the color very close, I cannot punch in any numbers to make it exact.

Does the eyedropper tool exist in photoshop 7?

Hi scollege

Open the colour forground pallet by clicking on the top colour at the bottom of the tools pallet.

The Colour piceker appears, with an array of colour options, from sliders to TGB, CMYK, and at the very bottom there is a Hex box where you enter the hex code you need. The colour in the folrclour box will change to reflect the hex you entered.

Then apply that colour to whatever layer or section of the image you want.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, but you're missing the point. Yes, I know how to open the color picker and enter a hex or rgb value to change the foreground color, etc.

What I'm really trying to say is I would like to change the color of an object by keying in this hex value into some dialog, so that the color is changed to the exact value.

"Images->Adjustments" allows me all kind of great tools to change color, saturation, etc. But it's generally slider opertated. Some tools allow for input but when I enter the rbg values I see in the color picker, the color that is rendered is not the correct one.

Hopefully I clarified this better.

Your welcome.

Hi, scollege,

Well, maybe a bit better but we will see:

I have CS2 and before that, version 7.  I can't remember what 7 has and doesn't have.

So, I created a new document and painted some ugly pink in the center.  Then I:

(1) Clicked Image --> Adjustments --> Replace color
(2) The pink was already selected but you can click to select what color to replace
(3) Then I clicked the color box to get the color chooser up and poked in a hex value.

Voila !

Now, you might not have the "Replace Color".

And there is still the matter of your comment, 'Some tools allow for input but when I enter the rbg values I see in the color picker, the color that is rendered is not the correct one', which suggest there is some other problem.

It would be helpful if you could explain more about what you are trying to do or even post the PSD file for us to look at.  For example, is this a photo you want to work on?  Or is it absolutely a single (one value) color you are trying to affect?  Is the PSD file a single layer, or are there other layers above the one you are working on?  What mode are you working in?

Regards,
Slynky

aplimedia,

I KNEW I should have let that help call that came through on my service line wait !!! (LOL)

Good deal, aplimedai!

Cheers!

I was concerned... an open Photoshop question without and Slynky comments!   ;-)

That service line call explains all...

Kind regards

For your edification:

I have "Replace Color" - that has been a Photoshop tool for several past versions (at least to 5.0, I believe). I had already tried the steps you mentioned but it didn't seem to work  - when I checked the value of the target object it was not the right value. I also note with this tool that the amount of "fuzziness" you have to apply can ruin the anti-alias, so I tend to avoid this tool.

And it was not a photo, but a filled shape.
