I like the local backup myself...I have recently been using Windows Backup scheduled to a USB Hard drive.  Runs a full monthly and differentials every day....If the job fails I get a message....so I will know if it fails for whatever reason or if the drive dies...Internet worried about security of my files as well as time to restore if needed.

You MUST have an offsite backup.  Be it via internet or by sneakernet.

In general, I believe internet is good to backup a few critical files, for example, an encrypted accounting file or an important access database.  Most people don't have the bandwidth or remote storage capacity to fully do backups over the internet.

You might want to have a read over my general backup comment - it started as a comment and grew and grew and grew into a web page - http://www.lwcomputing.com/tips/static/backup.asp

Agreed if you are concerned about disaster recovery like a fire, etc....you need some offsite storage but I find in general it is impratical as leew said for most people due to bandwidtch.

I assume that you are talking about a home system and not a business system.

Burning a DVD on occasion or CDRWs with your data and saving them offsite whether at work or someone's house is a good alternative...you might consider some internet storage companies....but i wouldn't want that to be my only backup.

Internet backup is in most cases unusable because you usually don't just have a few kilobytes to backup. If there is a normal amount of data to backup, you'll never finish doing this across the internet except if you have a very broadband connection (and so does the backup provider), and if possible it is dedicated for the backup only.

I am getting use to how the rating system works so I will comment and then place the accept later.

All great points. This is for a small Business start-up so the data load for back-up it relatively small but critical.
Leew - Top notch analysis on your web site. I thought it was smart and balanced. Giving the reader options for the best fit.

I am on a standard small business DSL so band width is a problem. I will reread the input given and probably go with a combination of local and perhaps dual backups with one copy going home with me. I will leave this up for a little bit longer.

Thanks for the input folks it is appreciated very much!

I would recommend an offsite storage location....maybe purchasing a small dlt tape drive to use for backups...Or really any backup method but make sure to have one offsite and make sure to verify your backups and occasionally attempt a restore to make sure you are safe.

Internet backups is not recommended. Takes too long to back up and takes to long to retrieive.
