Global vs Contacts

I have a 2003 exchange server. We are having a problem forwarding mail to one user. We can create a new message and select his name from either the Contacts list or the Global list and it will go correctly. One user can not forward anything if the name is selected from Contacts but can if it is selected from Global. One thing I did notice is that in the Contacts list the "email type" is EX and not SMTP like it is for all the others. He is a new user that has been recently added. What would cause the email type to be different? And could this be the problem?

One user one address?
Delete the address in Contacts and recreate.

It appears to get populated automatically once a user has been sent a message. It appears to be something in the particular message trying to be forwarded. I will test some more and if needed will open a new question. Thanks for your help.
