Symantec Anti-Virus Client failed to connect to new Parent Server

I am using Symantec Anti-Virus Corporte Version 8.1 and all the clients under network are attached to the Home Server (Parent) for the regular updates of anti-virus.

Recently I have to change my Home Server-1 to new Home Server - 2.

Before reformating my server - 1, some of the clients I was trying to redeploy the symantec client but failed. Hence I usually un-install anti-virus client and re-installing for selecting the new Home Server for the updates.

Finally after few days, I reformatted Home Server - 1 and removed it from Active Directory too.

Now I am facing a problem, whenver I am trying to un-install anti-virus client from the client PC, I cant install them again in order to reflect New Parent Server of Symantec Antivirus.

Could you please assist me in order to how shall I update the current Parent Server of Symantec Anti-Virus on all the client PC.

Regards
Kamlesh

Wonder if the DNS cache on the user pc's and the DNS server itself still reflect the old Home Server records.... try an IPCONFIG / FLUSHDNS on one of the user pc's and see if you can proceed.

DNS Server is fine at all the machine.

If now I install on any new PC, it will show me New Parent Server. But the problem is all the existing PC, when I am un-installing, it is happening. The moment I start installing again just for the sake of selecting new Parent Server, it goes directly to Finish, without installing it.

All are DHCP clients too.
I suppose you will be having licensed Symantec products . Please access www.symantec.com and use the online troubleshooting tool check the pc. It will download a small file on to the pc and scan the system and show any errors there.

I am not able to get that file. Could you please post exact link for Corporate Edition.
Seems it's not there or it's only available for home users.

Anyway try the link http://symantec.atgnow.com/security/categoryBrowse.do and refer the topics to see if the issue is mentioned here.
On the right hand side of the page there is an option to refine the search. Select the version 8.X to refer related issues.

The reason it is difficult to help you is since we do not know what the exact error is. It will be helpful to post any error messages that you get plus any events noted in Eventvwr. At this point it can be a number of reasons from firewall issues to Parent Server issue.

Hi V ic,

It would be appreciated if you could provide me the same.

Manually removal means you are referring me to Uninstall ?? If yes, I can do un-install. The moment i REINSTALL on the same client PC, it wont allow me to install only.

Dear Upul007, I dont think that Firewall is creating any problem. As its withing the same network. There are no error message, even trying seeing evenvwr, but none errors messages are reported. While REINSTALLING, the last page of installation appears where "Finish" button is there. And in that page, it is mentioned "Due to some erros, it is not installed"

Kamlesh,
We had big problems with the 'uninstall' function.
Apparently, Symantec/Norton leaves traces in the registry that affect future re-installs.

NoNav.exe clears out all traces from the registry.

Get the latest version of NoNav here: http://symantec.netvision.net.il/Enterprise/Removal%20tools/

PsExec is from Sysinternals.com

Create a batch command out of the following text:
(Put psexec.exe in your root (C:\)
(Put nonav.exe in your computer in folder nonav)

C:\psexec \\%E% -u AdministratorAccountName -p PASSWORD cmd /c \\YOURCOMPUTER\nonav\nonav.exe

This is just the removal piece, but it should enable your re-install to function.

Good Luck,
Vic

We have had success using the rnav20003.exe tool (http://service1.symantec.com/support/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606)

Also, your new server may have a new certificate (although that may only be for v9 and above). I wrote the following batch file to address that problem at one time. This probably isn't your problem, though.

if exist "c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\pki\roots\<<OLDCERTIFICATENAME>>.cer" goto UPDATE
goto NOUPDATE
:UPDATE
xcopy "\\<<PATH TO NEW GRC.DAT>>\grc.dat" "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\" /y
del "c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\pki\roots\*.cer"
xcopy "\\<<NEWCERTIFICATE>>.cer" "c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\pki\roots\"
net stop "Symantec Antivirus"
net start "Symantec Antivirus"
:NOUPDATE

hi Vic,

Could you let me know

C:\psexec \\%E% -u AdministratorAccountName -p PASSWORD cmd /c \\YOURCOMPUTER\nonav\nonav.exe

I have to user network admin login or local admin. If local, my passwork is <blank>, will it accept.

I will try this by next week and will surely update you.

Kamlesh,
I have never tried it without a password (that's a court marital offense around here), but you can read about it at www.systernals.com and test it out.

Your network account will work, but don't lend anyone your 'batch' file.

There are a lot of ways to run remote batch jobs, but we used a network application named "Hyena".
You can get a trial version (free) here: http://www.systemtools.com/hyena/download.htm
