How to copy and overwrite files, directories?

Hello,

I have two directories which are the same (files, sub-dirs, etc.). I want to copy files of the first directory to the second one with one command. But the command should also copy sub-directories, sub-directory files (Recursively), files and overwrite the existing ones wihtout asking me.

How can I do this?

Thanks.

Hi Mannezman,

To copy
cp -rf sourcedirectory destinationdirectory

To move i.e. destination would have contents of source and source would be removed
mv -rf sourcedirectory destinationdirectory

Cheers!

>mv -rf sourcedirectory destinationdirectory
should be
mv -f sourcedirectory destinationdirectory

Thanks SunnyCoder, but I need to enter Yes for each overwrite with this code. Is there any way to overwrite files without permission?

the -f option is force .. it should not priompt you for confirmation ... or do you have an alias set with -i option? check your ~/.bashrc file ... do you have an alias set for mv and/or cp command? If yes then comment it out ... logout and then login
