Windows 2000 - windows updates failing

I have a windows 2000 server that fails to complete windows updates. I have researched the error code but have been unable to correct the issue.

In the event logs I am getting an error that points to the wuaueng.dll (1512) and to the file C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution|dataStore\Logs\edb.log

I sseems as though there was a WSUS or SUS server at one time on the network, but is no longer there. How can I force the server to once again point to windows update site and not look for the WSUS server?

It is a domain and the server is a DC. I looked through the DC policy and domain policy and found nothing. I have 2 DC's and a number of other servers, but this is the only one with this type of error. Is there anything else I can check? or provide to help find the issue.

Also the error in the event log comes in once a day at the same time

The servers windows update is disable.

Hi,
look at the registry keys nevertheless.
Please give more information about what the error log does exactly say about wuaueng and edb.log.
You could as well have a look at c:\wintt\windowsupdate.log

Strange enough, todays the updates worked. I had resolved a hardware issue I was having and then rebooted the server. Later during my troubleshooting, I tried the windows update and it work. Thanks for your assistance, I am going to keep an eye on the logs just in case it comes back.

In the past I have rebooted and many other fixes with no luck, then today. strange but good
