That is very much expected ...
From the FAQ ...

There can be no debt or contingent liabilities associated with e-gold. For this reason, e-gold Ltd. does not possess any national currency of any nation and has no bank accounts. Thus, e-gold Ltd. is not able to offer currency exchange services.

Any third party which mediates transfer between you and e-gold is going to charge service charge as it has nothing else to gain

OK, so I am looking for the cheapest exchanger. It seems that IceGold adds 2% to the exchange rate, which for small purchases would be less than $5.

I would recommend reading reviews on the web about each mediator ... cheapest might not be the best ... saving 2-5$ might not be worth spending hours wondering where your money went ...
I have myself spent 10-15% extra in terms of service charge to get prompt and hassle free service.
Still, I will keep looking for a cheaper alternative for e gold
