Text sizing / field limits

I'm starting to run into problems with field sizes being too small or haveing too much text when reports are being printed.  Is there another way to restrict the length of text to fit a field WITHOUT setting a character length?

I find that setting a character length still doesn't solve the problem if theres a use of capital letters.  Clipping still can occur if this happens?

You'd better change the layout to take a bigger size into account by using a merge field, and setting it to shrink, using the sliding/pritning option on this block.
And, no there is no way to calc the lentgh of a string on layout except the nb of char. which always varies with fonts.

That is my problem now,  I have a preset for (From a image) and the fields overlay on top of it.  It can be only so big before clipping occures.  I think the only solid way to handle this is set a field limit and change the format of the field to adjust to case so theres no entries all in CAPS.

This sound like the best way?

I went with a courier font on all reports and everythings looking much better.  Now I can limit the fields through filemaker.  Thanks!
