How do I uninstall and reinstall USB printers? The plug and play options lead to a Cannot Install this Hardware error message.
My tech guy is on vacation this week and I could sure use some help. I'm using a fairly new Sony TX notebook at work with a port replicator so I can keep my monitor, and printers (and other stuff) connected and remain portable. At home, I have two printers (an HP Officejet all in one, and a Dymo label printer. Everything is USB. Everything at work had been working just fine. This weekend I attempted to install the two HOME printers using the disks that come with the hardware. Both failed, but both failures behaved the same i.e when the part comes to plug in the printer, the New Hardware Wizard appears, and after it does it's rain dance, it comes back and says the hardware couldn't be installed. After pursuing solutions via the HP and MS sites, I gave up.
Today when I came in the office, my HP printer would not respond and the New Hardware wizard started again. I tried reinstalling using the HP CD's, but all failed. Windows restore would not restore to an earlier date either.
Should I delete my USB controllers from the Device Manager? My goal is to get my devices at work functional AND my devices at home functional. It used to work with my previous laptop. Any help in this area would be appreciated as I'm on my own this week.
FYI- I'm using my IT managers EE account in his absence so if this is tied to email I won't receive anything. I'll check back here tonight and tomorrow for responses.

At work, my CardScan, Treo cradle, mouse, keyboard, and Dymo printer work. HOWEVER, my HP printer does not work and my Dymo printer works but I keep getting Add New Hardware prompts at startup for the Dymo. FYI, this all started with trying to install my two printers AT HOME which are also an identical Dymo label printer and an HP printer. So, my problem is isolated to the Dymo & HP printers both at work and at home.
Regarding deletine the USB controller files, I can't distinguish which file is for which device. If I knew which files were for the HP and the Dymo, I'd delete just those. Can you help?

I did delete the printer (HP Officejet 6110) at home. Tried reinstalling via the CD's. When prompted to connect the printer, the Windows Add New Hardware wizard appeared. Letting windows continue led to failure. When I ignored the Add Hardware Wizard, then it resulted in the "Cannot Install this Hardware" message. THEN......... when I got to work, my HP Laserjet 1300 did not work. I deleted that printer and tried to reinstall via the HP CD's. When I got to the part about connecting the printer, I did, and then the Add Hardware Wizard appeard. It couldn't find the driver. When I tried pointing to the driver, it didn't work either. I then contacted this forum.
I believe this is a situation where something is corrupt that does not allow the installation CD's to run their course. Perhaps my original installation of the equipment at my office was not done properly (in July), thus when I finally went to install the home equipment (Sept) it failed. I'm stumped.

I would try installing with either printer plugged directly into the notebook port to verify its not the hub. Otherwise, do you have the exact error message that it is giving you when it fails? Also, are you installing the printer with a user account that has full admin rights (i.e. you're using a local administrator account)?

I deleted the printer drivers for the 2 work printers that were behaving oddly: Dymo and HP1300. Rebooted..OK. Ran the HP install disks. Started OK, but received error titled "hplnchap.exe-Application Error". The instruction at "0x7c925e88" referenced memeory at "0x0000010c". The memeory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program." The install program continued to run in the background so I did not click OK. Got to the part about connecting the printer and connected. The Add New Hardware appeared. I clicked NO to auto find and navigated to the CD. Found the driver and clicked OK. Then received the error in the Found New Hardware Wizard window that said "Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: hp LaserJet 1300 An error occured during the installation of the device. The required section was not found in the INF. Click finish to close the wizard.
Then I tried installing via windows Add Printer utility. The entire routine appears to run successfully, but it doesn't print. From my perspective, there is something that is not getting deleted or unistalled that Windows won't let go of. Still stumped.

There were no printers to remove. The drivers had already been removed. Ran the HP removal utility to be safe. Downloaded the drivers from PCBONEZ link. Rebooted without the printers connected. The downloaded information did not contain an application, so I used the Add New Hardware wizard. Same failed results. Tried pointing to the downloaded files for the driver and it resulted in Cannot install this hardware.
I REALLY appreciate the effort that everyone has made here to help me. I'll survive this week and have to have my Tech guy dive into it when he returns. I can't spend anymore time rebooting etc. as it will lead me to drinking. When Erik returns next week, we'll take a shot at it. I'll post the solution here and then I guess I need to assign the 500 points. I'll check back in case anyone has any new thoughts, but I seem to be caught in a loop. Again, MANY THANKS for your efforts.

Yes, I meant the Add Printer Wizard. Sorry. It still didn't work. When I pointed to the extracted files from the download, it appeared to be trying to find some .inf file. It returned with an error message (don't remember the exact details). Whatever the .inf file was, I searched google and couldn't find it. I also searched the installation CD and couldn't find it. I even searched my C drive and couldn't find it.
Did you run the memtest? it is harmless.

nobus,
I took a look at the Memtest site and didn't understand which test to run. There was a bootable binary, a bootable ISO, and a USB key for DOS test. I didn't run any of them as they seem to be very technically oriented and beyond my comfort level. I'll run them if you want to give me some guidance.
My gut tells me my problem is tied to something extra or missing during the initial setup of my new notebook in July. Perhaps a file that was copied from my old machine that should have been installed via a utility. ALL of the devices connected to my system have worked before on my previous notebook (Fujitsu) and my preferred setup is not beyond the design of the machine. I forsee some reloading next week when Erik returns. There's just this burning feeling that this should be repairable and I hate to let the machines win.

After multiple attempts to repair, it was obvious the machine was not behaving properly. We decided to reload the system which took tons of time, but now most everything is working. I'm going to post points, but recognize that the answers I am selecting have nothing to do with the ultimate solution, but they did help us come to grips with the fact that this one needs to be reloaded. Thanks for everyones help.

I have tried different ports-didn't matter. I do have a powered USB hub.
Add/Remove programs did not list the software, so I used the utility from HP. They have a "scrubber" utility that removes everything.
I'm inclined to try to delete the USB controllers, but need to allow enought time because that means I'll have to reinstall at work my HP printer, Dymo printer, Treo cradle, Card Scan scanner, and I don't know about my Port Replicator. So you're suggesting it's OK to delete everything under my Universal Serial Bus Contollers branch in Device Manager? I'm assuming I'd then reinstall all devices one by one?
