Delayed Write Failed

What does Delayed Write Failed means in terms of samba. I have this problem with windows XP SP2 . For more than 4 years I did not have a problem with Win2000 using the same smb.conf . This article explains how to fix this problem http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=321733#top but my enablesecuritysignature value is already 0 apparently because I have SP2 installed. Any other ideas?

Could be something as simple as transferring data too quickly for the recipient to handle: what are you using samba for?

I had that message appear when moving an old flat-file database between servers  (billions of files a few bytes each).  I was cutting locally on the old DB server, and pasting over the network and it gave "delayed write failed".

I worked round it by reversing roles, cut over the network and paste locally - that way the server would only pull as fast as it could handle.

Hi CGretski,

I need it for accounting software ( MYOB ) .  There is only obe fali you need to open on network  and the whole software is installed localy. As I said this is working perfectly with win2000 but not with winXP. any ideas?

Chris Geraghty

was it the same status code in the event logs (c0000022 (which translates to STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) - from M$ link)?

it might be worth looking at samba's log files to monitor the connection, see if it gives any reason for dropping the connection.
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.

The problem is that it is hard to reproduce thes error. I will look in samba logs and windows events logs on monday and let you know...

HI CGretski,

I have linked this problem to this KB article it is exactly what is my event log on windowsXP desktop:
how ever this si more about MS server 2003

futher more here is error from samba:
oplock_break: client failure in oplock break in file XXXXXXXXXX
 17:52:16, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(384)
read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. Error = Connection timed out
