Backup of a Plextor PX-xxL NAS

Hello,

I like to buy a Plextor PX-EH40L NAS.
This network drive has 2 usb-ports which can be used to attach another usb-drive.
This attached drive can be used as a backup device for the NAS.

But when I read the online documentation, I see that I can choose between formatting in FAT or formatting in a dedicated Plextor format.

What is the advantage of choosing the dedicated Plextor format, if you know that you can't read the data on that second USB-drive unless attached on the Plextor NAS (or another one I suppose). If my NAS crashes, it would be very comfortable to read al the data on this backupdrive on any PC via the usb-port.

Is it a matter of speed?
Is it a higher level of raid/backup (i.e. if I use a simple FAT formatted drive, will it be a simple copy or Norton Ghost, and if it is Plextor formatted, will it be a real RAID 0)?

Thanks a lot,

Luke

Unless I missed something there is no RAID with this device at all.

I suspect the proprietary format is for data compression to save drive space.
I would not use it because I would want the drive to work in any standard computer should the need to arise.
If you have any Win98 machines on the network I would format in FAT32 and if not I'd use NTFS.
If you do that you can treat this drive as you would a second (non-OS) drive in any other computer on your network

Perhaps I was confusiing with the Iomega solutions.

That was indeed what I thought.

I don't find more info on that. I don't like compression algorithms on harddisk level.

Advantages:
- It looks to be very silent, in stead of every old PC or Dell.
- It will take a less space than the Dell machine, and certainly less footprint than that old PC (which I actually own)....

Whatever trips your trigger, it was just a suggestion.
