Shared printer

There is a mini network with one laptop to which has a printer connected to it.

Now obviously that laptop has to be on, for the other users to print, correct?

Is there anything they can buy, so the laptop doesn't have to be on?

Also, the users keep having to set the printer as default. Why doesn't it stay set ?

Yeah the laptop needs to be on in order for the printer to work.
If your printer has an ethernet port you can plug it into your router and then the laptop wouldn't need to be on.
You can buy a print server - a small device that you run the parallel cable into and it converts it to a ethernet connection. This will allow you to print directly to the printer without the laptop being on.
Those are the only ways I know to print without the laptop being on.

Not sure about the printer not staying default.
