Exchange store at 68.2 gig

This is what I got, is the offline defragmentation will get me 27 gig back?

unless there is an urgent need to reclaim that space, don't do it.  

1. The time spent to take the store offline and defrag may result in a weekend's worth of inactivity.
2. The time spent to move the users off that store, take the store offline and defrag and probable repatriation of the users to that store may result in a week's worth of inactivity.


It won't actually reduce the size of the database until you do an offline defrag.  This reports the size of the messages you filtered out for deletion, but this is also pending single instance store.  

If an email was sent to one hundred people, it isn't stored a hundred times.  It's stored once (theoretically) in a private information store and everybody receives pointers.

So if a lot of the mail is common in multiple mailboxes, the numbers may be a bit inaccurate.

This seems like a lot of space tho.  What did you set the mailbox manager to delete?

I tought that I will have gained 27 gig (this is huge is a standard edition of Exchange).

I will not do the Offline defragmentation.  I will built another Exchange Server and move some mailbox to the new server.

While on the topic ... maybe simon can shed some light.

My event only shows I would reclaim about a half gig of a 38 GB storage file.  But when I ran the defrag, I actually regained almost 20 GB.  Is it possible a lot of white space is not reported?  A lot of the space was freed up by moving about 10% of the mailboxes, and deleting all emails in the deleteed items folder over 30 days old (which was reported as less than 600MB).

The only way I could get an accurate figure was to analyze the file first without actually defragging.

Is there a way to make the deleted Item empty itself for the user in a maintenance (directely in the Exchange System Manager)?

I've come accross a workstation that had 160 mo in is deleted item folder

kjanicke - did you get your users to delete lots of content before running the offline defrag, but after the last online defrag?
Did you have a lot of other content like orphaned mailboxes and the like on the store?


Moved mailboxes about two weeks before.  Used mailbox manager to delete emails from deleted items two weeks before.  And purged all mailboxes associated with all accounts deleted about two weeks before.  No maintenance for two weeks other than standard procedure.

It's just funny becuase we have two servers, eight information stores on each, and every time I defrag, I reclaim more space than report in the event id.  Moved mailboxes only to seperate out the hi management staff who want more space, and don't want to be effected when defrags occur.

Only defragged to train people on backups, restores, and eseutil, and to get an accurate time estimate.  Trying to justify keeping limits low so available space on hard drive never goes below 115% of the biggest store.  We want to make sure we always have space for a defrag if required.  Logs are on a different drive.

It could be picking up single instance storage content and the like.
Exchange is normally pretty good with cleaning up after itself.
Although I don't do offline defrags regularly enough to comment further. I do them perhaps two or three times a year. It is not considered to be part of routine maintenance and in most cases they are a waste of time - downtime I usually cannot afford.
