exchange 2003 owa prompts twice for username and password

we are using exchange 2003 and we have enabled owa. when a user was inside our network it would not ask for a password, it would open the mailbox of the person that was logged in to the computer. when a user was outside the network, it would prompt for the username and passoword just once and it would work. Now, it is authenticating once when you are inside the network and twice when a user is outside the network. I have changed the Exadmin, Exchange, Public and  ExchWeb to Basic authetication. I have tryied many different settings but no luck. any comments will be appreciated. thank you.

Not an expert, but I don't think for OWA you need any authentication on those.  This is based on the fact that I associate "Basic Authentication" with HTTP based protection on folders and the Web Server prompting for userid/password.  For OWA you don't need this.  The Active-X pluging that get downloaded (or Javascript for non IE Browsers) should handle logging them on to OWA.
