New XP install - but Windows Update Fails

Hello there,

I'm going slightly mad here. My Windows update is failing. I've done some reading around it and can't think what it can be ... I'm using Windows Firewall and Virusscan enterprise. I've tried turning off both and updating but I still get the same problem. I can go everywhere else on the net.

Here is the contect of WindowsUpdate.log in systems folder ....

I am using a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster and have tried to open port 443 TCP in and out.

Can anyone help ?

S.S.

This is a new install?  Updates require SP2 to be installed...  have you done this already?

Yup - sorry - forgot to mention that ...
Have you installed SP2 yet?

If not, you might try downloading it from here:

SP2 was installed from the start ! Sorry for the confusion
have you check if you have correct   date and time :)
Hi S.S.

I realize that there is code error= 0x80072EE2, which indicate that there is a synchronization failure in the connection establishment. It can happen if there is a firewall from your network administrator so if you can contact him to give you an open port so that you can update or go and connect to another network if u have a laptop or use a dial up connection to update. It happened with me before and i went to my friend home network. It was working fine.
Error: Agent failed detecting with reason: 0x80072ee2

From other threads, this error refers to a network timeout error...  might try connecting directly to your perimeter router/modem and bypassing the Linksys...
Hell there ... 'timeing out' seems to be the issue ... i bypassed the router, but still got the same. I actually rebuilt the whole system from scratch to same effect ...

So, I looked for alternatives - and found Wundizupdate for Firefox ...

It took a hell of long time to detect what I needed ... all 68 meg of it!! But it did it ... and downloaded and installed it.

Thus I can only assume my ISP is having some problem with port 443 - it's coming down slow or something and IE is timing out ...

Thank God for Firefox, because these updates are really needed !

S.S.
Well, that is one way to skin this cat, eh?  Cannot imagine that your ISP is doing this intentionally, but....

anyway, glad you got your updates!

FE
Good that you get it through another browser.

This actually turned out to be a problem with the broadband line coming into the house (believe it or not) - the signal strength was not high enough (NTL, UK) and by adjusting it, it made Windows Update and a number of other site work seemlessly. OK - I know if you are reading this you are thinking 'yeah, rrrrrrrrright' but I saw it with my own eyes ... :)
No, actually, it is quite believable...  if the line was properly installed in the first place, and the tech took readings (attentuation, etc.), it would never had happened in the first place...  seen it many times before!  :)
