Problem with Exchange 2003 SMTP Virtual Server queues after Ip address change
We just went through an IP address change. Everything went smoothly with the exception of my Exchange 2003 SMTP Virtual Server Queues. The Default SMTP Virtual Server IP address is "all unassigned". We are currently receiving mail but are unable to send it. DNS and replication between domain controllers is functioning properly. The Exchange server has the appropriate PTR and A records in DNS. I receive the following errors when trying to access the queues.
Exchange System Manager failed to retrieve queues for the SMTP Virtual Server (error code = 0x800706BA). Check the event log and verify that the required services are running.
Exchange System Manager failed to retrieve queues for the X400 protocol (error code = 0x800706BA). Check the event log and verify that the required services are running.
Any suggestions?

Using the Exchange err.exe tool the code 0x800706BA regers to the RPC server not being available. Have you confirmed that your DNS entries on the servers are pointing to your internal DNS servers?

The correct DNS settings have been confirmed.

I've also made sure WINS is working properly and has the correct information.
Are there any further errors in the event logs?
It seems Exchange still has the old IP address store somewhere.
Try searching the registry for the IP address. You can also check the AD with ADSI edit (somewhere under: CN=<YourServername>,CN=Ser vers,CN=<Y ourAdmingr oup>,CN=Ad ministrati ve Groups,CN=,<YourOrganizati on>,CN=Mic rosoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Co nfiguratio n,DC=yourd omain,DC=c om).
I suspect it could also be in the IIS Metabase, which you can view/edit using "Metabase Explorer" from the IIS 6.0 resource kit.
Takes some searching, but I'm pretty sure that it should be in one of these locations...
Hope this helps,
Maurice

Try to create another SMTP Virtual Server and assign the new address to this one.
Did you reboot the server after changing its IP address? If not, then you should.

I found one occurrence of the old IP address in the registry as a binding under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWA RE\Microso ft\Exchang e\ContentF ilter] and deleted it.
I'm working with ADSI Edit now. I'm having some difficulties locating the path mentioned above.
I created another SMTP Virtual Server with the same results.
The system has been rebooted several times.

Did u delete the old SMTP Virtual Server?
And try to restart the Exchange Services.

The delete option isn't available for the Default SMTP Virtual Server. Delete is available for any manually added virtual servers.

I discovered what the problem was. Someone had added an entry to the hosts file that contained the old address. I deleted the entry and we're back in business.
