Application works on old PC not new one

I have an application that was developed on my old PC running on Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2 that was developed using MS Access 2003 (6566.6568) SP2. It has since been migrated to dozens of other computers where it runs happily.

Recently I purchased a new PC which is also running on Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2 with MS Access 2003 (6566.8036) SP2. On this machine the application crashes closing MS Access and sending a message to Microsoft soon after launching the main form in Access. I have tried running other MS Access applications but the same problem surfaces.

I have completely removed MS Access, re-loaded it and downloaded and installed all the updates again but the problem persists. I have tried turning off Norton's Internet security but that doesn't fix the problem either. When I look at the Windows log it gives the following message: "Faulting application msaccess.exe, version 11.0.6566.0, stamp 42cdb33e, faulting module msjtes40.dll, version 4.0.8618.0, stamp 403430ac, debug? 0, fault address 0x0001302d."

Can anyone tell me what I can do to get MS Access to work properly on this new machine or what to do to find the cause of the problem.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will work my way through them one by one to see. I will post answers as I progress in case it prompts some additional thoughts.

Flavo, it's not likely to be a corrupt database. I copied the database onto the other machine and it ran perfectly. At any rate there are a number of databases that aren't working on this machine.

rockiroads, I tried unregistering and re-registering the .dll but that didn't solve the problem. I also tried loading MS Access 2002 (I kept 2003) but the same problem appeared so I removed it again. I tried disabling Nortons for a while but it made no difference. What's this about a Norton's Office plug in?

Hi Jim,
I was starting to work my way through the other suggestions and noticed yours and it made me curious. Pardon my lack of knowledge but a couple of things confuse me.
First, if there's a problem with my code a-la subform example, why would the same application work faultlessly on dozens of other machines?
Second, I tried to figure out how to de-compile but not sure where to type in the command. As it turned out I tried to compile one application and it wouldn't compile because I had not set a reference to MS Excel. I fixed that, compiled the program, tried it and it still crashed.

rockiroads, I tried the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114 but it tells me that if I am running Windows XP SP2 (which I am) I already have the latest version of Jet 4 so that's not it either. I have accepted all the upgrades to MS Office 2003 so that's not it either.

JimD,
Tried a decompile, save and recompile. Then, without trying to open a form I tried to simply edit one of the queries and it crashed immediately before opening the query. One comment you made makes me very nervous "Differences in processor speed can trigger bugs". I am running a laptop with A centrino duo 2GHz processor - surely that's not too fast for MS Office?

Puppydogbuddy,
I've also tried looking through the troublshooting links but my problem is not listed.

rockiroads,
I tried looking at that Nortons Office add on but I don't think it is a separate component of Nortons 2006.

Well I think I have exhausted all your suggestions so far. I have no idea where to go from here other than to go back to using my old laptop to develop MS Access applications.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Again my ignorance shows through but how do I start in safe mode?

Incidentally, I tried creating one of the databases from the standard template and it appears to work fine. It seems to be only my databases that are failing. What will running in safe mode accomplish?

Jim,
I just tried running the application in Safe Mode and it worked perfectly (small screen) but faultlessly. Does this mean my machine won't run these MS Access applications properly?

I just tried running the app again and got a little further than usual this time (no I did not make any changes). It installed some MS Graph feature and the form opened correctly. I then closed the form and when I re-opened it it went through the same MS Graph feature install process but this time it crashed. I'm begining to think you're right about it running in some bizarre way on this machine. Without any ch anges it works sometimes and fails others. I would have thought a fairly expensive Sony Vaio would not have problems of this nature. I guess I go back to my generic old no name brand - at least it works.

>>> Sad fact is, something like this is really hard to pin down sometimes :(
Is this something I take to Sony or Microsoft????

Hi PDB,
I ran the application and it came up with hundreds of invalid entries. I followed the process through to buy the $US29.95 licence to fix the problems but got a little nervous when it asked me for my eye colour, mother's maiden name and birthday as well as my credit card details. Is this a reliable site?

JimD,
I have been running this PC on Stamina rather than speed mode so I will try to change and see if that works any better. As for the video driver, I have been using it on both the built in monitor as well as an external LCD monitor and neither is working. I will try to see what other options are available.

JimD,

I tried changing my settings back to Speed instead of Stamina mode. That made no difference. I tried changing screen resolution from 1280 x 600 to 800 x 600 and that made no difference either. What other changes do you suggest I try?

Well, I've tried running the registry cleaner but it's made no difference. I will try to replace the video driver next. In the meantime I have contacted Sony and they beleive the problem is a Windows so I have sent an e-mail to Microsoft - will be interesting to see if they enter into this issue.

I have been diverted onto another job today but I discovered something else that is strange. I needed to link to an extenal table via an ODBC connection. Doing so from Excel is no problem but when I try from MS Access nothing happens, ie I created a new blank database; used the menu path File>Get External Data> Link tables; change the types of files dropdown to ODBC Databases() and it closes the Link window back to the main database window. Is that a MS Access or Windows function that is failing? Is there any way of deleting MS Access (again) including any residual registry entries and re-installing without removing and re-installing all of MS Office? Is there a way to run a repair on Windows XP without completely wiping everything and re-installing?

At this stage Sony want me to simply re-load the original image, which means removing all the additional software I have on it, to see if that fixes the problem. I can't afford to do that at the moment. I have a project that will take some months to finish and it would be impractical for me to reload that software at this point.
Microsoft want me to call them but I suspect they will want me to re-install Windows. The way the Sony is set up I can't do that without wiping everything and. as I've said, I can't do that now so there's little point contacting Microsoft until I get to the point that I can.
Therefore I have resigned myself to doing further MS Access development on the old machine that works.
There would appear to be no point keeping this question open so unless someone objects I will soon award points for your contribution and close out this question.

Thanks to all of you for your help. Every answer helped lead me to the final conclusion that this matter needed to be referred to Microsoft. I have divided the points as best I could.
Rob,

Thanks for getting back on this.  Sorry to hear that's where you ended up.

Rob,
There is one product that I recommend you try before giving up.....Norton Utiliies, which is part of Norton System Works.   I've used it many times for difficult problems not fixed by Registry Cleaners, and it would be well worth your investment (approx $50) to try it.
