FISMO ROLES - Domain controller move.

Hi Guys,

3 Machines

Mail server:  Mailserver - Windows Server 2003 with Exchange Server 2003
DC at headquarters:     DCMAIN - Windows Server 2003
dc at Data Centre:        DCSEC - Windows Server 2003

Got a simple question for you.
I got two domain controllers one at a data centre and one at the hq.
I want to shutdown the hq side of operations and remove the domain controller from here along with the exchange environemnt in which it runs. Since the domain controller at the hq is the machine that holds all the fismo roles, can i just use ADUC to transfer them? Like click on operations master in AD and go through RID, PDC, Infrastrucure and just switch them over to the ones at the data centre and then simply demote the domain controller at the hq.
After that, just uninstall exchange from the server next to it?

Thanks,
Raf

Hi dqnet,

ADUC will only help with 3 of the 5 FSMO roles - here is how to get them all -> http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm

Are you ever intending to use this exchange server again?  Do you want the data on it?

Hope that helps,

I dont think we will be ever using the exchange server again in that organisation.
Hmm, in respect to the data, what options do i have?

If you think you will not use it again, I would export all the mailboxes out to PST files with Exmerge and then uninstall and forget about it

Netscaler Common Configuration How To guides

If you use NetScaler you will want to see these guides. The NetScaler How To Guides show administrators how to get NetScaler up and configured by providing instructions for common scenarios and some not so common ones.

cool, so i will export those couple of mailboxes that they want to keep and just uninstall exchange?
but shud i unsintall exchange before or after i transfer the roles?

my plan was this:

transfer roles to other dc
uninstall exchange
demote dc in current office
remove mail server and old domain controller and format

It doesn't matter really - assuming none of the roles are held by the exchange server.

Your plan looks spot on, good luck with it
