I have heard of the RDP protocol and that terminal services is based on that. How can I write my own 'terminal services server' (with some client/server code for illustration).

you can't. it's copyrighted and patented by microsoft and you would have to enter an expensive licensing agreement for the information you require.

you might want to look into vnc ( http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html ) which performs a similar function and for which the source code is freely available.
