No root node when displaying menu of sitemap

I want a menu that looks like this

child1
child2-child21
child3

eg without the root node displayed

now I only get a menu like this

root-child1
        child2-child21
        child3

The menu is generated from a sitemap file and I am using asp.net 2.0

on SiteMapDataSource set showstarting node to false
