I bought a firewire cable from from Staples to connect my computer to the cable box.  I get a pop up message asking me to install drivers for an AV/C pannel and/or AV/C tuner.

Where do I get such software?

From the "cable box" supplier. They are probably available on line, if you could provide more details about the unit, we might be able to help you locate them.

I was able to find such on line for the for the Motorola DCT 6412.  Apparently there is no way around the 5C switch.  I'm jest getting in to this.  Apparently the only work around is to purchase a digital dvd recorder and hook it to the cable box.

Ah ! That kind of "cable box". Sorry I am not very familiar with the AV equipment, hopefully someone else will be better equipped to assist, however usually the equipment to which you are connecting provides the necessary drivers and or software unless they make use of built in features of the operating system. In that case it should be plug-n-play.
