Windows XP Pro, SP2 - NTFS

Hello, after I had two times the problem that my ntfs file index was currupted, giving me some hard time, I think it's time to look around:

What is the best way to recover from a broken index and/or $security file?

I already got acronis trueimage 9 running, so I had no "real" problem still I wonder what to do best in such cases.

chkdsk /r c: from the windows setup CD was able to recover the index, though I have got no 100% trust in MS tools: still ntfs bitmap file seems to keep some space occupied that should be already free as chkdsk told me. Several chkdsks did not solve that problem.

What would you do?

I'm NOT looking for some file recovery tools, I got already: O&O DiskRecovery V4 and PC INSPECTOR File Recovery 4.x, this is not my problem, the NTFS index was broken!

if your files are corrupted regularly, there is clearly somthing other going on :
- a bad disk or cable or controller
- ram problems
-other issues.
i would test the system; to do so, download the ubcd  : http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/download.html
and run memtest86+, and the disk utility for your drive at least.
if you want a whole pc test, run burnintest : http://www.passmark.com/download/index.htm
or tufftest lite :  www.tufftest.com/tt01-lite.htm

Nope, 1st I've resized some partitions and as it seemed windows had some problems with it. Reinstalled the OS.
2nd time I had a power failure. Chkdsk did solve the problem so this system is again up and running.

No other issues.

Both 2 different computers.

Alright, I got a solution:

http://www.oo-software.com/en/products/oobluecon/

O&O BlueCon V6
A total Windows system crash is every administrator's worst nightmare. But with O&O BlueCon V6, users, administrators and service technicians now have a collection of professional tools at their fingertips to get damaged Windows systems up and running again - with no new installation required. With the integrated data recovery products (available in Admin and Tech Edition) from the well proven O&O RescueBox, any type of data can now also be recovered, even from systems that won't start anymore. The inclusion of O&O SafeErase means data can be securely deleted - this product leaves no possibility of it being recovered again. The Windows-based user interface enhances the experience yet further, making O&O BlueCon V6 eminently clear and simple to use.

Was able to resolve the chkdsk issue perfectly.
